Commander (retired) William Spencer Hargreaves, R.N. (16 November, 1883 – 16 August, 1945) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Bolton.[1]
In 1903 while serving in the battleship Albion, Captain Jerram noted that Hargreaves had a "very bad temper".[2]
Hargreaves was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1906. This was later adjusted to 30 September, 1906.[3]
Hargreaves was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1914. At the outset of the swar, he was appointed to Lord Nelson, leaving her on 23 December, 1914. On 31 March 1915, he was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Arlanza as first and gunnery officer. He was superseded in July, and was hospitalised with stomach ailments.[4]
On 19 February 1916 he was appointed to some shore work that is hard to decipher. In the middle of the year, he battled appendicitis. From 27 October 1916 he was assigned to Scarborough W/T Station. On 1 March 1917 he was moved to Pembroke W/T Station, where he remained for the rest of the war.
Hargreaves was placed on the Retired List at his own requet at the rank of Commander on 16 November, 1923.[5]
World War II
He was involved in the Coast Guard's Coast Watching Organisation from 1938 and saw no naval service in the war.[6]
