Vice-Admiral (retired) Leonard Laurence Peel Willan (17 April, 1877 – 22 November, 1957) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Commander L. P. Willan, R.N. was born in Tokyo, Japan. Willan gained eight months' time on passing out of Britannia.
Willan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in June, 1899.[1]
Willan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911.[2]
Willan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1917.[3]
Willan was appointed in command of the Lord Nelson on 28 February, 1918.
Post-War
Willan was appointed in command of Castor on 21 December, 1920.[4]
Willan commanded the minelayer Princess Margaret until he handed her over to a C & M Party on 17 May, 1927.[5]
Willan was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 24 March, 1929 and placed on the Retired List the following day.[6]
Willan was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 11 February, 1934.[7]
World War II
In October 1940, Willan was appointed to Eaglet, additional as Commodore of Convoys, serving in the rank of Commodore, Second Class R.N.R..
In early 1942, plebitis in his left leg prompted a recommendation that he receive shore service. On 2 June, he was appointed in command of Flora and as N.O.I.C., Invergordon vice Wolcot to serve in the rank of Captain. He was reverted to the Retired List 11 September 1945.
In 1953, Willan suffered hemoplegia.
