In 1895, Underwood was faulted for failing to check the depth of a bar before crossing it at Port Durnford when his command, the torpedo cruiser Racoon touched the ground. In April, 1896, Colonel Sir Francis Cunningham Scott in command of the Ashanti Expedition thanked Underwood for rendering valuable service, and he was praised for his good service in the bombardment of the Sultan of Zanzibar's Palace on 27 August, 1896.[4]
Underwood was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 24 January, 1898, to receive retired pay of 400 pounds per year.[5]
