Admiral SIR Hugh Henry Darby Tothill, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., Royal Navy (14 March, 1865 – 25 September, 1927) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Hugh Henry Darby Tothill was born at Clifton, Bristol on 14 March, 1865, the son of Mr. Francis Tothill, barrister and magistrate.

Tothill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 January, 1888.[1]

Tothill was appointed in command of the training brig Nautilus on 20 January, 1898. He was discharged from this duty on 31 December, 1900.[2]

Tothill was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1900.[3]

Captain

Tothill was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1905.[4] On 19 March, 1906, he was appointed in command of Barfleur, and as Flag Captain.[5]

He served as captain of Illustrious on 1 October, 1907.[6]

He was appointed as captain of Minotaur on 3 December, 1909.[7] It was to prove a short-lived posting as on 1 January 1910, he was made Captain of Lancaster.[8]

Great War

Tothill was appointed in command of the dreadnought battleship Conqueror on 22 December, 1914.[9] He commanded her at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Second Battle Squadron, and penned her brief after-action report, which was oddly not delivered to the proper authorities until March 1919.

On 15 September Tothill was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) dated 31 May.[10]

Tothill was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 17 April, 1917, vice Hunter.[11] On 31 May, he replaced Rear-Admiral Lionel Halsey as Fourth Sea Lord.[12] In the King's Birthday Honours of 3 June, 1918, Tothill was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.).[13]

Post-War

On 1 August, 1919, Tothill was made Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, hoisting his flag in Highflyer.[14]

Tothill was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 June, 1921.[15]
