Captain Herbert Roxby, M.V.O. (9 February, 1848 – 5 December, 1905) served in the Navigating Branch of the Royal Navy.
His son, Leycester Curzon Maude Roxby, would also serve in the Navy despite a frail constitution.
Life & Career
Roxby was promoted to the rank of Navigating Lieutenant on 10 May, 1875.[1]
Roxby was appointed to the Portsmouth flagship Asia for the corvette Bacchante on 10 May, 1877. He was lent to the ironclad Glatton on 10 June, 1878, and returned to the Bacchante on 27 August.[2]
He oversaw an engine trial of first-class torpedo boat T.B. 2 on 23 December, 1878, effectively serving as her commanding officer.[3]
On 22 May, 1879, Roxby took T.B. 5 on what was then the fastest passage on record, travelling from Portsmouth harbour to Plymouth in twelve hours over smooth seas. Despite some fog slowing the early portion of the trip, the mean speed worked out as 18 knots. Five tons of coal were aboard, being consumed at a rate of eight hundredweight an hour.[4]
Roxby was promoted to the rank of Staff Commander on 13 February, 1887.[5]
Roxby was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 22 February, 1899.[6]
