Captain John Henry Loftie, (7 October, 1874 – 17 January, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in County Armagh, the son of H. P. Loftie, who requested on 1 May 1890 that his son be called J. Henry Loftie. Admiral Fairfax approved this request.[1]

Loftie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1896.[2]

On 3 December, 1903, Loftie was appointed to Furious as first and gunnery officer. After an accident that damaged a 12-pdr gun mounting in February 1904, the Admiralty expressed displeasure at a want of supervision on his part.[3]

Loftie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1907 while in the last month of a three-year appointment as first and gunnery officer in Juno.[4]

Loftie served as executive officer in the battleship Bellerophon from January 1911 to 28 December, 1912.[5]

After paying off Glory in April 1914, Loftie was appointed to H.M.S. Vivid for the Boys Training Establishment, where he remained until 4 January, 1917.[6]

Loftie was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 11 October, 1920.[7]
