Captain (retired) Charles William Stares Leggatt, C.B.E., R.N. (5 August, 1864 – 29 April, 1954) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Crofton, Hants.
Leggatt was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1887.
Leggatt was appointed in command of the destroyer Ferret on 12 February, 1896.[1]
Leggatt was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1899.
While in Ganges, he lost a 37 foot steam boat by towing her too fast. On 14 December, 1901 he was faulted for meting out summary punishment to an A.B. which provoked the man's disobedience of orders, eventually resulting in a Court Martial.
Leggatt was appointed in command of the Fourth Rate drill ship for the Royal naval Reserve, Eagle from 12 August, 1908 to 31 March, 1911. Upon paying her off, he lost two confidential books and supplied unsatisfactory reasons as to why.
Leggatt was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 1 April, 1911.
On 1 August 1914, appointed as Divisional Naval Transport Officer, Liverpool. On 24 May 1915, he moved from there to work on the Naval Transport Staff at Devonport. This move apparently upset him, as he asked the Admiralty for the reason behind the decision, and was told they could not comply with his request. He further asked if it had anything negative to do with him, personally, and received another unresponsive reply.
On 31 October 1918, he was appointed Divisional Naval Transport Officer, Devonport. His appointment here entered on 15 November, 1919.
