Commander (retired) Reginald Wilfred Lawrence, D.S.C. (13 May, 1890 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of a manufacturer, Lawrence served first in the R.N.R., being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 19 December, 1914. He served in the E 14 and was awarded a D.S.C. for service in the Dardanelles and Sea of Marmara in APril and May of 1915.[1]
Lawrence transferred into the Royal Navy for meritorious service on 12 June, 1916. With his background in merchant service work, Captain Longden would assert (in 1921 during a stint in Valiant) made him appear "slow".[2]
On 1 April, 1916, he was appointed to the "S" Class submarine S 1.[3]
On 18 May 1918 he was admitted to Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar for neurasthenia.[4]
Lawrence was appointed in command of the destroyer Amazon on 12 November, 1918.[5]
Lawrence was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 19 December, 1922.[6]
On 22 January 1926, he lost some ammunition from Wrestler and failed to notice the discrepancy.[7]
In December, 1926 he received a negative evaluation from Admiral Osmond de Beauvoir Brock. In 1928, there was a Court of Enquiry into a collision between the minesweeper Dundalk, under Lawrence's command, and H.M.S. Dunoon. It was concluded that the collision was entirely Lawrence's fault.[8]
He became a specialist in aerial photography.[9]
Lawrence was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander (retired) on 16 June, 1934.[10]
