Admiral SIR Henry Hervey Campbell, K.C.V.O., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (27 February, 1865 – 12 February, 1933) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Campbell was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 5 on 24 May, 1886.[1]

On 22 April, 1887, he was Court Martialed for stranding Starling by default and sentence to be severely reprimanded.[2]

On 21 November, 1886, Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.[3]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1898.[4]

Captain

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 26 June, 1902.[5] He was appointed a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) on 14 October.[6]

In November 1904, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Highflyer.

He was appointed to command the first class protected cruiser Terrible in May, 1905.

Campbell was captain of Hindustan from December of 1909 through May of 1912.

Fisher recounted to Jellicoe a story concerning Campbell:

Flag Rank

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 September, 1912, vice Burney.[11] On 29 November he was appointed to the Admiralty on Special Service. For the Test Mobilisation in July, 1914, he was appointed in command of the Ninth Cruiser Squadron.[12] He struck his flag at Sheerness on 26 July.[13] On 23 July it was announced that Campbell would succeed Rear-Admiral Stuart Nicholson as Rear-Admiral in the Home Fleets at the Nore on 5 December.[14]

Great War

Campbell was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1917.[15] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 February.[16] On 1 July, he was appointed a Groom-in-Waiting in Ordinary to the King.[17] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 23 October.[18]

Retirement

Campbell was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 16 May, 1921.[19] He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) on 1 January, 1930.[20]
