Admiral SIR Henry Harvey Bruce, K.C.B., M.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (8 May, 1862 – 14 September, 1948) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Bruce was born in Plymouth, the son of Captain Sir J. C. Bruce, R.N.. He passed out of Britannia in mid 1877 and served in the Mediterranean, first in the armoured frigate Black Prince, then the screw frigate Raleigh and finally being appointed to Monarch in November 1879. He received a severe wound to his right eye and a slight wound to the left from a guncotton explosion in Monarch in June, 1881, necessitating his being invalided to Malta Hospital in the sloop Condor. In October, his left eye was doing well and he underwent surgery on his right eye.

In October 1882, his entrance to College was delayed for a week by a sprained ankle.

Bruce was awared the Egyptian Medal in 1883.

Bruce was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1884.[1]

Bruce served in Marathon as first and gunnery officer from 1 January 1894. When Captain Maconochie fell ill in April, 1896, Bruce was made Acting Commander in Command of the ship. Maconochie died at year end, and it is not clear whether Bruce ever relinquished command before being appointed to Andromache as first and gunnery officer in mid-June, 1897.

Bruce was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901,[2] and was given a two year appointment in command of the depot ship Tyne in August.

Captain

Bruce was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1905.[3]

On 5 January, 1910, Bruce was appointed in command of the pre-dreadnought battleship Prince George.[4]

He commanded the armoured cruiser Defence from January, 1911 until January 1913.

Bruce commanded the battleship Hercules from June 1913 until April, 1915.

He took up the appointment as Superintendent of Rosyth Dockyard on 1 June, 1915.[5] He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 27 April, 1917.[6] On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 4 June.[7]

Post-War

On 1 January, 1920 he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.).[8]

Bruce was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 May, 1922, vice Sheppard, and was placed on the Retired List on 2 May.[9]

He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 8 November, 1926.[10]

His funeral service took place at St. Michael's, Chester Square, London. Among those present were Sir Henry F. Oliver, Sir Alan G. Hotham and Sir Howard Kelly.[11]
