Captain Cecil Charles Acland Allen, (15 December, 1894 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Charles P. Allen, Esq., M.P. and Barrister and Law.
Allen served in H.M.S. Indomitable from mid September 1912 until 25 May, 1915. He then spent five months in T.B. 11 before being appointed to Mandate on 30 October, 1915.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 December, 1916 and continued to serve in Mandate until being superseded on 14 April, 1917. He spent three months in Oriole and then served in Paladin until 21 December, 1917 when he was appointed to the "V" Class destroyer Vega. He served in Vega through February, 1920 when he was appointed to the battlecruiser Hood.
Allen was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1924.
Allen was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1930.
Allen was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1937.
A 1938 Court Martial concluded that Allen demonstrated a "regrettable lack of seamanlike precaution" in a grounding of H.M.S. Dundee, resulting in a severe reprimand. He received a supportive comment from Admiral Meyrick as he weathered out the time remaining to paying off his command, but the First Lord weighed in and indicated that Allen should be relieved as soon as convenient and "not again employed in command of a ship at sea."
World War II
Appointed in command of the light cruiser Newfoundland vice Ravenhill on 1 September, 1945. He was re-appointed as Flag Captain and Chief Staff officer to R/A Commanding Second Cruiser Squadron, vice Howard Johnson on 31 July, 1946. The squadron changed to Fifth Cruiser Squadron the next day. Allen's last naval command ended on 6 January, 1947. He retired on 8 January, 1947.
