H.M.S. L 56 was one of thirty-five "L" class submarines completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Completed to full crew on 29 November, 1921. In March 1925, she was part of Second Submarine Flotilla in the Mediterranean.[6]
2 S.F., then numbering five "L" class submarines, left Malta for England on 26 October, 1926. The formation was expected back in Devonport on 7 November and the boats would fall under command of Rear-Admiral (S).[7]
2 S.F. apparently returned to the Mediterranean, however, remaining there until at least early 1929.[8]
By mid-1931, she had been transferred to the Fifth Submarine Flotilla,[9] where she remained until at least mid-1937, being reduced to Reserve on 8 January, 1936.[10]
In 1934, her bell, inscribed with her name and perhaps her motto, was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at a price between £1 and £5. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[11]
