Commander William Elbridge Sewell (16 November, 1851 – 17 March, 1904) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Sewell was born in New York and was appointed to the Naval Academy from that state, graduating with the Class of 1871.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 14 July, 1872. He briefly served as commanding officer of torpedo ram Alarm in 1881, and was promoted twice in 1883 - to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 3 March and to the rank of Lieutenant on 13 October.[2]
From 1887 to 1891 he served as Navigation Officer at the Mare Island Navy Yard.[3][4]
During the Spanish-American War, Sewell served as Executive Officer of, successively, dynamite cruiser Vesuvius and gunboat Topeka. By 1900 he served as Executive Officer of collier Abarenda, having been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 3 March, 1899.[5][6][7]
Sewell served as Equipment Officer at the Portsmouth Navy Yard from 1900 to 1902.[8][9]
Having been promoted to the rank of Commander on 21 January, 1902, Sewell was appointed to command supply ship Supply in August of that year. He brought the ship to Guam in early 1903, where he assumed duty as the Naval Governor of the island. Stricken with illness, Sewell was brought to the Mare Island Navy Yard in early 1904 and died there on 17 March.[10][11]
