H.M.S. L 17 (1918)
Pendant Number: L.17[1]
Builder: Vickers[2]
Launched: 13 May, 1918[3]
Sold: Feb, 1934[4]

H.M.S. L 17 was one of thirty-five "L" class submarines completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

In 1919, she collided with a floating dock at Haslar.[5]

In March, 1925 she, L 14 and L 18 comprised Group "M" Submarines in Reserve at Portland under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Henry N. Lake.[6]

In mid-1927, she was one of two minelaying "L" class submarines in Group "M" Submarines in Reserve at Portland.[7]

In early 1929, she and L 14 comprised Group "M" submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth under the collective command of Lieutenant-Commander Alexander Scrope Hutchinson, who'd been appointed on 15 November, 1928.[8] This group remained intact until at least mid-1931.[9]

By early 1933, a third boat had joined Group M, and the officer in command had changed.[10]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

There is clearly an issue with Oram and Okell.
