Commander (retired) Charles Fenwick Stow (14 March, 1885 – 10 May, 1927) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Stow was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1907.[1]
In May 1911 he applied for service with the Australian Naval Forces.
In April, 1912 he was faulted for damaging T.B. 19 by fouling a buoy while mooring at Sheerness. Commander-in-Chief Admiral Poore cautioned Stow in the aftermath.[2]
In July 1912, Captain Smith reported that Stow was argumentative and drank more than was desireable.[3]
In September 1912, he was lent to the Commonwealth of Australia for three years. In January 1914, Captain Smith noted that Stow was "getting heavy."[4]
Stow was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1915.[5]
Stow worked with Australian ships in the war. A Court of Enquiry faulted him for grounding Swan, and Cdr. Bond said that Stow "has not the knack of getting the best service out of his officers & men, and his methods have caued a certain amount of friction between him and his officers." His tact and manner appeared to improve by late 1917 in the opinion of Commander (Commodore?) Warren.[6]
Stow was appointed in command of the destroyer Salmon on 15 October, 1920.[7] Vice-Admiral Gaunt noted that Stow "handle[d] ship well & possesse[d] good abilities", but was "wanting in service keeness & energy" and that the gunnery efficiency was of a low standard.[8]
Suffering from myelitis, Stow was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 9 January, 1925 and promoted to the rank of Commander on 14 March, 1925.[9]
