Rear-Admiral (retired) Edmund St. John Garforth, C.B. (7 May, 1836 – 27 December, 1920) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Garforth was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 January, 1857.[1]
Garforth was promoted to the rank of Commander on 14 September, 1867.[2]
Garforth was promoted to the rank of Captain on 18 August, 1876.[3]
On 29 August 1883 he was tried by Court Martial and acquitted on a charge of allowing Eclipse to come into collision with merchant vessel Nereid.[4]
Garforth was informed on 28 June, 1886 that "so many of the fittings of the Rupert being worn beyond repair on board during short time of ship's commission appears to indicate a want of care and attention in keeping the fittings in good order." On 20 August, 1886, he grounded the ship off Sheerness.[5]
Garforth was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 24 January, 1890 and promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 June, 1891.[6]
