Captain (retired) Wilfrid Pearse Gandell, C.B.E. (1 November, 1886 – ) served in the Royal Navy. Some sources have him as Wilfred.

Life & Career

Born in Baywater.

Gandell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1906.[1]

Gandell was appointed to Zealandia for torpedo duties from 28 October 1912 to 9 July, 1915, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1914. He then served in St. Vincent as torpedo officer until 29 August, 1917, fighting in her at the Battle of Jutland. In December 1917 he was sent to Portsmouth Signal School, where he remained through 27 September, 1920, being promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[2]

In 1927, it was noted that he was not suited to staff work.[3]

Placed on the Retired List due to non-service on 8 April, 1929, Gandell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 November, 1931.[4]
