H.M.S. X1 was a large cruiser submarine in the Royal Navy launched in 1923 and completed in 1925.

Design and Construction

  • four QF 5.2-in Mark I guns in two unarmoured turrets, 100 rounds per gun
  • six 21-in torpedo tubes forward

Service

Construction was overseen by Robert Henry Taunton Raikes, who was appointed to the vessel on 11 December, 1922[2].

She paid off on 23 January, 1924, which seems odd, as she had not yet been commissioned; perhaps 1926 was intended.[3]

On 29 January, 1925, Philip Esmonde Phillips was appointed, to assume command when the vessel finally commissioned later that year.[4][5]

Reduced to one-third crew on 9 February, 1931.[6]
