H.M.S. Birkenhead fought at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Third Light Cruiser Squadron.

Service

At the Battle of Jutland, she was one of four light cruisers of the Third Light Cruiser Squadron screening the battlecruisers, operating under Captain Edward Reeves.[7] Reeves wrote a three page report of Action on 9 June.[8]

On 23 April, 1919, Cole C. Fowler hoisted his flag in Birkenhead as Rear-Admiral Reserve Fleet, Portsmouth. Exactly one year later, St. Vincent took over this flagship role.[9]

Birkenhead paid off at Portsmouth on 26 May, 1920.[10]

Alterations

Birkenhead had no Dreyer table.[11]

She was fitted with a director in July, 1917. This alteration required her pole mast to be replaced with a tripod mast for greater rigidity.[12]
