H.M.S. Quail was one of twenty-four "B" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "30 knotter".
Service
Quail was commissioned along with the Sparrowhawk on 10 August 1897 for the West Indies Station.[8]
The ship paid off at Devonport on 21 August, 1903.[9]
On 14 January 1907, she and seven other "River" and "30 knotter" T.B.D.s. of the Second Destroyer Flotilla arrived in Portsmouth from Sheerness.[10]
In September, 1912 through at least mid-1913, she was active with the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla — a patrol flotilla.[11][12]
On 8 May 1913, as she made her way back to the Royal Dock at Grimsby after operations with the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla off the north-east coast of England, she collided with a quay, receiving moderate damage forward.[13]
