H.M.S. Sussex was one of four London Class cruisers completed for the Royal Navy.
Construction and Particulars
The ship had a silver bell cast for it shortly before its completion by Messrs. Stone and Company of Deptford. It was 18.5 inches high with a clapper 17 inches long with a knob 3 inches in diameter and consisted of over 6,500 troy ounces of silver, costing in just that component about £705. Its manufacture had been funded through efforts led by Lord Leconfield, Lord Lieutenant of Sussex.[6]
Service
Commissioned at Chatham on 26 March, 1929.[7]
She commissioned on 27 October, 1931 for service with the First Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean.[8]
Re-commissioned at Chatham on 18 July, 1934 for service with the First Cruiser Squadron, first on the Australia Station[9] and by mid-1937 in the Mediterranean.[10]
