Admiral SIR Colin Richard Keppel, G.C.V.O., K.C.I.E., C.B., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (3 December, 1862 – 6 July, 1947) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Early Life & Career
Keppel was appointed to the Alexandra as Flag Lieutenant to the Duke of Edinburgh, Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean, on 24 December, 1886.[1]
Keppel was appointed to the Undaunted on 18 February, 1890.[2] On 4 August, 1890, he followed the Duke of Edinburgh to Plymouth as Flag Lieutenant.[3]
For his services in the Sudan, Keppel was noted for promotion to the rank of Captain upon completing the necessary sea time.[4]
He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Grafton in March 1902.
On 12 May, 1904, Keppel was appointed in command of the battleship Implacable.[5]
Keppel was appointed in command of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert on 4 August, 1905.[6]
On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) on 26 June, 1908.[7]
Flag Rank
Keppel was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 August, 1908, vice Greet.[8] He succeeded Rear-Admiral William B. Fisher as Rear-Admiral in the Atlantic Fleet on 26 August, 1909.[9]
Keppel was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 7 December, 1913, vice Denison.[10] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 December.[11]
He was appointed an Extra Equerry to King George V on 1 June, 1915.[12]
He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 26 April, 1917.[13]
He was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order on 1 January, 1930.[14]
