In the Royal Navy, a Captain of the Fleet was a designation bestowed upon the senior Captain in some Fleets or on some Stations. It was not, in itself, a rank per se.

The use of this title was sporadic within the service. When Archibald Moore was appointed as Captain of the Fleet to Sir William H. May in the Home Fleet in August, 1909, it was the first such appointment since 1871.[1]

Permitted Retinue

In 1888, a Captain of the Fleet was allotted the Secretary, Flag Lieutenant and Coxswain afforded all flag officers and Commdores, First Class, as well as two domestics.[2]
