Lieutenant-Commander Edgar Christopher Cookson, D.S.O., V.C. (13 December, 1883 – 28 September, 1915) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Captain W. E. de C. Cookson, R.N..
Cookson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.
Appointed to Clio as first officer in September, 1912.
Cookson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.
Cookson was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, when at age 31 he ordered his river gunboat Comet placed alongside an obstruction in the River Tigris as the scene was swept by machine gun fire. In the heat of the maelstrom, Cookson jumped onto a dhow equipped with an axe to attempt to sever hawsers binding her to other small craft. He was shot multiple times and died soon thereafter.
