Captain (retired) Denis Edward Rahilly Royal Navy, Retired (1 September, 1887 – 30 June, 1937) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Dahilly gained first class certificates in Seamanship, Pilotage, Gunnery and Torpedoes.[1]
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 30 November, 1907. His service record notes that he spoke German with a moderate level of fluency.[2]
He served in the destroyer Ostrich from 6 April to 28 September 1908, and then in Goshawk until 23 March, 1909.[3]
He served in H.M.S. Dreadnought from 24 March 1909 to 5 August, 1910, at which time he was sent to H.M.S. Excellent to qualify for gunnery duties.[4]
Great War
Rahilly served as gunnery officer in H.M.A.S. Sydney from 3 February, 1913. He helped her sink the German light cruiser Emden on 9 November, 1914. He was still in her when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander with seniority of 30 November, 1915.[5]
On 23 December 1916, Rahilly suffered a compound fracture of his left leg in a heavy sea. He was sent to Queensferry Hospital for four months, and officially discharged from Sydney on 30 January, 1917.[6]
Rahilly was assigned work helping to prepare Gunnery Books. In mid-1918 he was declared fit for shore duties only.
Post-War
Rahilly was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 6 October, 1919.[7]
Promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) with seniority of 1 September, 1927.[8]
Rahilly was appointed to be the Deputy Inspector of Naval Ordnance at the Naval Ordnance Inspection Department, Newcastle.[9]
On 28 March 1928, he was appointed to be the Inspector of Naval Ordnance at the Naval Ordnance Inspection Department, Newcastle, vice Commander (retired) Willis.[10]
On 1 January [year not visible, possibly 1930, 1931 or 1932], Rahilly was appointed to Naval Member of Ordnance Committee, vice Jackson.[11]
Promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) with seniority of 1 January, 1932.[12]
Rahilly served as "A.I.N.O." from 9 December 1937 until June, 1940 when he was appointed to some duties at I.N.O. Headquarters, Bath. He relinquished this appointment on 13 July, 1940.[13]
