Armstrong, Whitworth & Company, Ltd. was a British shipbuilder which was founded in 1847 but did not commence building ships until around 1882.
History
The firm acquired Joseph Whitworth's operation in 1897. The company grew to encompass shipyards at Elswick and Walker on the Tyne, as well as ammunition works at Scotswood on the Tyne. Its subsidiary Erith Engineering Works and ordnance works was based in Pozzuoli, Italy.[1]
In 1927, the company merged with Vickers. The new company became Vickers-Armstrongs and continued to supply naval construction, naval systems, as well as assorted other military hardware through World War II and beyond.
