Captain (retired) Godfrey George Webster, R.N. (26 September, 1871 – 12 September, 1942) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Dublin.
Webster was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1893
Webster was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1904.
Webster was placed on the Retired List due to non-service on 25 April, 1909.
Webster worked in transport duties in Glasgow at the outset of the war, and then switched to coaling duties at Hulthea and Campbeltown. Thereafter, his transport work moved to a variety of ports including Liverpool and Havre. His last posting was as Divisional Naval Transport Officer, Taranto, appointed 22 May, 1917. He returned to England in December, 1918.
Webster was demobilised on 25 April, 1919 and promoted to the rank of Captain in recognition of his wartime service, dated 11 November, 1918.
Curiously, Webster seems to have declined an O.B.E. the King had approved for him, and the Admiralty voiced their disagreement with the decision that Webster could be allowed to do this.
Webster offered to serve in World War II, but was told that it was not expected that his services would be required. He died of a cardiac arrest.
