Construction

Ordered by Brazil from Armstrong, Mitchell, & Co., but purchased by the United States as reinforcements during the crisis leading to the Spanish-American War.[1] A third ship, Almirante Barrozo, had been completed and delivered to the Brazilian Navy in 1897.[2]
