Rear-Admiral Forster Delafield Arnold-Forster, R.N. (27 August, 1876 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of E. P. Arnold-Forster, Esq. J.P., Forster gained a commendable twelve months' time on passing out of Britannia in December, 1891. His evaluations throughout his career teemed with superlatives.
Arnold-Forster was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in February, 1897.[1]
Around 1907, Arnold-Forster prepared a Notebook on Electricity and Magnetism which impressed the Admiralty enough that it was adopted for use in ships' libraries.[2]
Following a year in which he suggested time-saving improvements to a war game while at a War Course, Arnold-Forster was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1908.[3]
On 7 October 1909, he was granted two months' time on half pay on account of urgent private affairs. On 17 November, he was appointed to the battleship Jupiter.[4]
On 12 April, 1911, Arnold-Forster left Jupiter to take up an appointment at Vernon for experimental torpedo work and for command of Rocket.
Arnold-Forster was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Apollo on 1 January, 1914.[5]
Arnold-Forster was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Latona on 7 August, 1915. He would be awarded a C.M.G. for his work in mining in her, invested at Buckingham Palace on 3 July, 1918. Promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1916, Arnold-Forster was superseded in command of Latona on 13 September, 1916. He was presently placed in command of the Macedonia and moved over to Teutonic on 8 September, 1917, assuming command on 1 October.[6]
In January 1918, Arnold-Forster was appointed to provide duty on the staff of the Director of the Anti-Submarine Division.
Post-War
Arnold-Forster temporarily became Director of the Anti-Submarine Division on 2 January, 1919 but gave up the post upon being appointed in command of the light cruiser Champion on 7 April, 1919.[7][8]
On 4 April, 1921, he was sent to Portsmouth for a Senior Officers' Technical Course. He ended his naval career with an appointment as Captain in Charge, Simonstown, assuming command on 15 June, 1921. He kept busy, revising the scheme of Manoeuvring Signals, though there remained resistance to its adoption. He retired from the Royal Navy on 31 March, 1923.[9]
Arnold-Forster was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 July, 1927.[10]
