Captain Charles Vernon Gridley (24 November, 1844 – 5 June, 1898) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Gridley was immortalized in Dewey's order to him at the Battle of Manila Bay: "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley."
He took ill soon after the battle and was superseded in command of Olympia to be sent back home. He died in Kobe, Japan while en route less than five weeks after the battle that made him famous.
