Admiral Francis Spurstow Miller, C.B., R.N., Retired (25 November, 1863 – 6 February, 1954) was a gifted and zealous navigating officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

In September 1882, Sub-Lieutenant Miller had charge of a Gatling gun at Alexandria and Port Said.[1]

Miller's promotion to the rank of Lieutenant was dated 22 May, 1885.[2]

In July 1891, Miller was granted surveying pay for assisting Rambler in a survey of the northern part of Harrah Island. In September 1892, the Admiralty expressed its appreciation for his efforts to catalogue information about Lerwick Harbour in the Shetlands. Miller was awarded the [Shadwell Testimonial]] some time before 1898, perhaps for one of these two contributions.[3]

Miller was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1897.[4]

Captain

Miller was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1903.[5]

He was appointed to command Hawke on 9 July.[6]

In 1903, Miller helped prepare a helpful pamphlet on the Mooring Board and the Battenberg Course Indicator. In July 1904 the Admiralty thanked him for preparing a handbook on navigational subjects.[7]

Miller was appointed in command of Sutlej in May 1906.

He was appointed to command the battleship Goliath on 4 December, 1907.[8]

On 8 August, 1909, he was appointed in some capacity to the Hydrographic Department, remaining there until 10 December, 1912.[9]

He was appointed to command the destroyer Duncan in December 1912.

Miller was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 14 October, 1913.[10]

Great War

On 8 August, 1914, Miller was appointed Rear-Admiral at Scapa Flow.[11]

On 18 May, 1917 Miller was appointed to take charge of the northern division of the naval command in Ireland, taking pressure off the leadership in Queenstown.[12] Miller was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 September, 1918.[13] His title at the close of hostilities was Vice-Admiral, Buncrana, and in charge of the Northern Division of the Irish Command.[14]

Post-War

Miller was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1919.[15]

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 29 January, 1920.[16] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 June, 1922.[17]
