S.M.S. U 27 was one of four U 27 class submarines Germany built.

Service

On 18 October 1914, U 27 discovered the British submarine E 3 patrolling off the Ems and stalked her unseen from the up-sun side close to 800 yards before firing. E 3 sank rapidly and U 27 did not stop to pick up survivors.[4] U 27 became the first submarine to sink another submarine.

On 31 October 1914, U 27 sank the seaplane carrier Hermes in the Straits of Dover.

On 11 March 1915, she sank the commissioned escort ship Bayano off Carswell Point, Stranraer – the third enemy warship she had claimed!
