Commander (retired) Arthur Madryll Cheere Stileman (5 June, 1889 – 8 January, 1953) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Wimbledon, the son of a solicitor.
Stileman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1911.[1]
Stileman was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 036 in October, 1912,[2] and was reappointed in November, 1913.[3]
Great War
Stileman's promptness in attacking an enemy submarine on 7 August, 1917 was noted by the Admiralty.[4]
On 9 February, 1918, Stileman was appointed in command of the destroyer Tenacious.
On 6 August 1918, he was admitted to hospital with illegible complaints. He was fit one week later.[5]
Post-War
Stileman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1919.[6]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Wolfhound on 2 September, 1920. He was reprimanded for grounding her in October 1921.[7]
On 6 October, 1931, he was admitted to Chatham Hospital with chronic appendicitis. He was found fit on 7 December.
Stileman was placed on the Retired List at his lown request with the rank of Commander on 5 June, 1932. In August, his appeal to have some monies refunded him from his appendectomy at Chatham Hospital was refused.[8]
World War II
Stileman undertook "N.C.S." duties in the Mersey in 1939 and later, illegible tasks in Plymouth and elsewhere. At the end of the war, he was involved in Coast Guard work. Early in 1949 he was granted total exemption from further mobilisation.
Stileman died of coronary thrombosis on 8 January, 1953.[9]
