The Training Squadron commissioned at Portsmouth and Chatham on 21 September, 1885, under Commodore, Second Class Robert FitzRoy. It was initally composed of the Active, Volage, Rover, and Calypso.[1]

On 30 October, 1899 the masted Training Squadron was paid off. The following day the crews turned over to first-class cruisers.
