Henniker-Heaton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.[2]
Henniker-Heaton was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the destroyer Arun in May, 1905.[3]
Henniker-Heaton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1908.[4]
On 30 April, 1910 he married Mary Dorothy Isabel Houstoun.[5]

That same month, Captain Veale recorded that Henniker-Heaton possessed ability, but had "failed in giving his best application to the work of the war". In response, Admiral Ballard wrote, "do not altogether concur. Found Comm. Heaton's suggestions in regard to certain re-organisations very useful."

He left Edgar on 17 April, 1919.[10]
On 9 April, 1921, he started work with the N.I.D., being superseded there on 29 December, 1924.[11]
