Captain Geoffrey Shuttleworth Holden, Royal Navy (25 March, 1886 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Holden was born in Aston on Trent, the son of the Reverend J. S. Holden.[1]
Holden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1908.[2]
Holden was appointed in command of the T.B. 077 on 14 December, 1909.[3]
He was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 22 on 30 July, 1912.[4]
Holden was appointed in command of the destroyer Star on 3 February, 1914.[5]
Great War
Holden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1916.[6]
He grounded North Star on 5 February, 1917 and was cautioned to be more careful in future.[7]
On 11 January, 1917, he was appointed in command of the submarine Sceptre.[8] He would ground her, too, on 8 November, 1917 and receive the same light treatment as before.[9]
On 10 December, 1918, he received an expression of appreciation from the Admiralty for his work in creating novel fire control gear aboard H.M.S. Sceptre.[10]
Post-War
Holden was appointed in command of the destroyer Sikh on 15 April, 1919.[11]
Holden was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1922.[12]
He was admitted to Haslar Hospital on 7 November, 1929 to be operated on for acute appendicitis. He was soon found fit and his present appointment extended to 29 June, 1932 when it was planned that he would retire.[13]
Holden was admitted to the hospital on 15 March, 1922 for multiple tooth extractions. As previously planned, Holder was promoted to the rank of Captain on 29 June, 1932 and was placed on the Retired List that same day at his own request.[14]
World War II
Holden was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain on 10 November, 1939.[15]
