U.S.S. Holland was America's first submarine, and the archetype for early British and Japanese efforts in undersea warfare.

Construction

Launched in 1897, she was purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1900. She was part-replacement for the unsuccessful steam-powered Plunger, also designed and built by John P. Holland.

Service

Holland commissioned on 12 October, 1900 with Lieutenant Harry H. Caldwell in command.
