At some point prior to mid 1902, [[William Henry May]] examined the fire control communications scheme manifest in the {{US-Illinois}} and found much to covet when discussing British methods of communicating in battle as [[Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy]] &ndash; particularly the simplicity of the system.  A follow-up to this observation resulted in Messrs. Cory of New York being asked to quote a complete set of the instruments in the American ship, but the dialog evolved to one primarily of voice pipes and there is no indication of how this inquiry turned out.{{PQDNO1905|pp. 418-9}}
