Vice-Admiral SIR Maurice Swynfen FitzMaurice, K.C.V.O., C.B., C.M.G., Royal Navy (12 August, 1870 – 23 January, 1927) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 28 January, 1892, FitzMaurice was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 14 May, 1890.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 31 December, 1902.[2]

He was promoted to Captain on 30 June, 1910.[3]

FitzMaurice was appointed Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence on 9 November, 1910.[4] He was reappointed as Assistant Director of the Intelligence Division on the formation of the Admiralty War Staff in January, 1912.[5]

Great War

He was appointed in command of the battleship Triumph on 5 August, 1914,[6] and was in command when she was sunk on 25 May, 1915.[7]

FitzMaurice was then appointed additional to the first class protected cruiser Europa on 15 June, 1915, the ship being under the command of Captain John E. Drummond.[8]

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 1 January, 1916.[9]

He commanded the Dreadnought from April to August, 1918.[10]

Post-War

FitzMaurice was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 26 November, 1920, vice Hope.[11] He was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Military Division of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1921.[12]

Following the Prince of Wales's return FitzMaurice was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) on 16 October, 1925, dated 29 July.[13]

FitzMaurice died at Simonstown on 23 January, 1927.[14]
