H.M. T.B. 13 was one of 19 first-class torpedo boats of the T.B. 1 class.
Construction
Uniquely for a Royal Navy torpedo boat, T.B. 13's hull was made of brass (The Times reported it as manganese bronze), which was hoped to prevent corrosion.[4]
Although designed to make 20 knots, during her initial trials she could not reach more than 13 knots.[5]
Service
After completing trials in the Thames, T.B. 13 was sent to Portsmouth in December 1879.[6]
In 1881, there were twenty T.B.s in all; T.B. 13 was one of eleven boats serving out of Portsmouth.[7]
Despite a reliable engine, T.B. 13's performance fell off considerably during her service at Portsmouth, and by 1886 she could only make 11 knots.[8]
In 1895, she was one of four first class torpedo boats of less than 125 feet in length and thirteen longer ones stationed in Devonport.[9]
