Admiral Lionel Grant Tufnell, C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (27 October, 1857 – 11 August, 1930) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Tufnell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 10 August, 1881.[1]

He was appointed Flag Lieutenant to Rear-Admiral James E. Erskine, Senior Officer on the Coast of Ireland, on 31 December, 1888.[2]

Tufnell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1895, at the age of thirty-seven years, eight months and three days.[3]

Captain

Tufnell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1901.[4]

In February 1904, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Astræa, staying with her until November 1905.[5]

He served as captain of the battleship Irresistible from June 1906 until some time the following year.[6]

He was temporarily appointed command of Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport on 20 September, 1910.[Citation needed]

Tufnell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 January, 1911, vice Foley.[7] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, dated 19 April.[8]

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 9 June, 1916.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1919.[10]
