Admiral SIR Henry Hervey Campbell, K.C.V.O., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (27 February, 1865 – 12 February, 1933) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Campbell was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 5 on 24 May, 1886.[1]

On 21 November, 1886, Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.[2]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1898.[3]

Captain

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 26 June, 1902.[4] He was appointed a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) on 14 October.[5]

In November 1904, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Highflyer.[6]

He was appointed to command the first class protected cruiser Terrible in May, 1905.[7]

Campbell was captain of Hindustan from December of 1909 through May of 1912.[8]

Fisher recounted to Jellicoe a story concerning Campbell:

Recently at Naval Club Portsmouth, Bayly heard Cap Henry Campbell of “Hindustan” running down Sir W. May to a lot of Lieuts. & he goes up to him & says “We are all here in plain clothes but tomorrow at 10 AM I will call on you officially & tell you what a cad you are to run down your own Comdr in Chief to these young officers.”
The beauty of it is that Bayly hates May![9]

Fisher would also refer to Campbell as a "d—d sneak."[10]

He was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George V on 20 March, 1911, vice Moore.[11] He was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) dated 24 October.[12]

Flag Rank

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 September, 1912, vice Burney.[13] On 29 November he was appointed to the Admiralty on Special Service. For the Test Mobilisation in July, 1914, he was appointed in command of the Ninth Cruiser Squadron.[14] He struck his flag at Sheerness on 26 July.[15] On 23 July it was announced that Campbell would succeed Rear-Admiral Stuart Nicholson as Rear-Admiral in the Home Fleets at the Nore on 5 December.[16]

Great War

Campbell was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1917.[17] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 February.[18] On 1 July, he was appointed a Groom-in-Waiting in Ordinary to the King.[19] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 23 October.[20]

Retirement

Campbell was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 16 May, 1921.[21] He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) on 1 January, 1930.[22]
