Admiral Sir Nowell Salmon, K.C.B., V.C. Sir Nowell Salmon won his V.C. in the Indian Mutiny, when serving as a lieutenant with the “Shannon Naval Brigade” in India before Lucknow. Lord Walter Kerr, of the Channel Squadron, then a midshipman, was one of his shipmates and took part with him in the Indian campaign. Before that, however, Sir Nowell has seen war service with the Baltic Fleet in 1854 and 1855. Since then he has been A.D.C to the Queen, and Commander-in-Chief, first on the Cape and West Coast of Africa Station, and then eight years ago on the China Station. He has been Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth since June 1894. Next year Sir Nowell will complete half a century of service on the Active list.
